South Africa reveals its commemorative set

The South African Reserve Bank annnounced earlier this year that a special commemorative banknote series would be issued thuis year, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela.

In a press release dated 13 June 2018 the Reserve Bank finally shows the design of this new series. The front of the notes remains the same as the current series. The back of the notes show a portrait of a young Mandela and places connected with his life.

10 rand: Mvezo, the villiage where Nelson Mandela was born as Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela on 18 July 1918.
20 rand: Soweto, where Mandela lived part of his life and began his prostest against Apartheid.
50 rand: Howick, where Mandela was arrested in 1962.
100 rand: Robben Island, where Mandela spent part of his prison sentence.
200 rand: Pretoria, where the 9 m high statue of Nelson Mandela is placed in the Union Buildings grounds.

The new series will be issued from 18 July 2018.
