Saw this photo on Reddit and just had to share it. The stunning banknotes from Switzerland that have been issued so far.

Funny video for new Norwegian 200-kroner note

It's only a few more days until the Norges Bank issues the new 100- and 200-kroner banknotes. These will be the first two notes of the highly anticipated new series

To celebrate this event the Norges Bank has begun a campaign featuring the video below which is 'celebrating' the new 200-kroner note which has the image of a cod on the front.

The video features the trio KLM along with a certain 'DJ Codfather' singing the song "Torsken kommer II – Torske kroner nå" which roughly translates into something like "the cod is coming". The rest of the text is more difficult to translate into English according to Bank President Øystein Olsen.

I wish more central banks made bizarre funny videos like this!

A fountain pen note!

As some of you may recall I wrote a little post about another hobby of yours truly: fountain pens. I wrote that I couldn't find a banknote with a fountain pen on it and this eventually led to a great gift by Mujand with my very own fantasy banknote which you can see here

The story doesn't end there however.

Yesterday I received a reply from Duncan Reid from De la Rue pointing out that a banknote with a fountain pen DOES exist. Behold, the 1999 note from Cape Verde of 2,000-escudos (P66) featuring the Cape Verdian poet Eugénio Tavares on the front and a part of the poem "Morna de Aguada" on the back designed by De la Rue. On the front and back we can see a fountain pen as a front-to-back see-through register, overprinted on a hologram and as part of the security thread.

Great find and thanks for the tip!

Women on Canadian banknotes

Last year there was some discomfort among Canadian women when it became clear that no women would be on the new banknotes save for Queen Elizabeth II. The Bank of Canada didn't make any new female friends when they cancelled their plans to decorate the new 50 dollar note with the  "Famous Five," a group of women that fought to see females recognized as persons under the constitution, and Thérèse Casgrain, a feminist and the first woman ever elected to lead a political party in Canada. They were replaced by an icebreaker.

Now over 48,300 people have signed a petition on Change.org asking the Bank of Canada to commit to featuring women from Canadian history on future banknotes. On their website you can even upload your own favorite Canadian woman on the 100 dollar note.

Before you ask: yes I know Pamela Anderson is Canadian...

Exhibition 'The New Face of the Euro'

From 23 July until 1 September the city of Den Haag (The Hague) hosts the exhibition 'The New Face of the Euro'. Goal of the exhibition is to educate the public on the eurocoins, euro banknotes, its history, the future of the euro and of course show the second series of banknotes. On 23 September the new 10 euro note will be put into circulation.

Because it was the first chance for me to actually see the new note upclose, I visited the exhibition in the Atrium (main hall) of the City Hall on the 23rd. Below you can find some pictures I took. Unfortunately I only had my phone as a camera but I hope it will give a good impression. If you plan to visit as well, check out the Facebook page of the Atrium with all the information.

And now for the pictures:

Dirty Money! (NSFW-ish... to some people)

Yes, we all had a jolly good laugh with the announcement from the Russian MP Roman Khudyakov that the Russian 100 ruble note should be altered because Apollo's penis is visible. The private parts mentioned are visible on the statue of Apollo standing in front of the Bolshoi Theater which is depicted on the banknote. According to Khudyakov, this violates the recently-introduced law on protection of minors from harmful information (a law perceived in the West to be mostly anti-gay).

After I had stopped laughing I started looking for other banknotes which might offend the Russian MP. Yes I know: a dirty mind is a joy forever. So if you're up for it (and if you're not easily offended), let's look at some of the filthy porn some people have been using to pay their innocent groceries with.

Nice wedding gift

It is tradition in China to send gifts to fiancees. A 'tuhao' (a new word meaning 'rich people') in North China's Tianjin gave a large fortune to his daughter, including several properties and a one-million-yuan car. But the 99 sheets of uncut banknotes, which include some foreign currencies, are the most eye-catching.

Angry Spanish messages found on banknotes

So apparently the Spanish have found a new way to show their disaproval of politics and the banks. More and more banknotes are circulating with angry messages written on them. An innovative way to spread your message but bad news for us collectors, I guess.

Update: Tunisians also use this form of protest it seems.

Kickstarter project: the 2 dollar bill documentary

At Kickstarter a new project is trying to gather funds: a documentary about the US 2 dollar banknote. As a European I never realize this but apparently this banknote is quite fascinating. Some ignorant shop owners have even turned customers away believing the note to be fake! Well, John Bennardo is also fascinated by them and wants to make a documentary about the note.

Still 5 days to get to the goal of $18,200!
