There have been several rumours about bigger denominations in Azerbaijan. None turned put to be true. But now the Central Bank of Azerbaijan has indeed introduced a new denomination of 200 manat.
The US company Crane Currency won the contest on development of the new currency design. The currency, that incorporates progressive security features, was printed by Giesecke+Devrient.
The motif of the new note is the ‘Heydar Aliyev Center’ constructed to the memory of 'National Leader' Heydar Aliyev. The new banknote features the image of the Heydar Aliyev Center, the main exterior and interior design elements, elements of national carpet samples and other national ornaments.
In 1642 Dutch explorer Abel Tasman was the first European to see the islands he named Staten Land which was renamed in 1645 to Nova Zeelandia after the Dutch province of Zeeland. British explorer James Cook anglicised the name to New Zealand. The coat of arms of the Dutch province of Zeeland shows a half-drowned lion referring to the history of floods (seen on the right). The most recent one happened in 1953 when a catastrophic flood killed over 1800 people in Zeeland and led to the construction of the protective Delta Works.
It is very fitting that the new fantasy series from Mujand, which is called Zealandia, has a major water theme. Zealandia is called "Earth's Hidden Continent". The front of the notes show a flood scene, beautiful women, a very cool seaweed & bubble hologram strip, unique serial numbering and continent topography. The back of the note seems a bit empty on first glance until you realize it shows underwater images and acurately captures the tranquillity and serenity of the underwater world. The notes are printed on polymer, have nice colors and crisp images and come in four denominations. An example of one of the notes can be seen below. The full set can be seen here or ordered here.
Two previous issues have been given an extra note. First is the O-series of Toroguay with a 50-lixo note. The second series is the F2-series of the Tobacco Notes of the Poneet Islands. A 25-kasatu note is now also for sale making this the third note from this series.
Maybe you're reading this and thinking: "what the hell is this guy talking about?? Toroguay, Tobabbo Notes... wait, WHAT?!" Both series are made by the very talented fantasy note designer Celsus Solar and are part of the fantasy world of Mujand. In this world we have on the one hand Blissdane Naive (a fictional planet hosting a variety of nations) and on the other hand Earth with several fantasy series from different countries.
There is a huge variety in notes, stories and artwork. The beauty of these notes can be seen in several series. One of these is the first note (of many I hope) from Yellowstone National Park. The use of colors, the chosen animals and natural phenomena are spot-on. I could totally see these notes selling in the visitor centers at the different National Parks.
All these notes and previous series can be bought in the Mujand Shop.
Disclaimer: these fantasy sets were sent for review purposes. The text is entirely mine and was not paid for or asked for in any way.
The Ulster Bank has presented its new banknotes of 5 and 10 pound as reported by various sources like The Irish Times. The new notes will have a design feature unique to currency in Britain and Ireland: they will have a vertical orientation.
The five pound note features pictures of Strangford Lough and Brent Geese while the ten pound version shows Lough Erne, an Irish hare and Guelder-rose shrubs. The notes also feature culinary delights associated with the north, namely a king scallop and an Ulster Glade potato.
Another remarkable design feature is the little 'tab' on the top of the note. It took me a few takes before I realised it was part of the front of the note and not a partially-cut piece of an image of the back of the note.
There are people worrying that the notes won't be accepted outside Northern-Ireland but the Ulster Bank stressed all banknotes from the north are legal currency in the UK "and will be able to be used for cash transactions across the UK."
The new notes are expected to be issued into circulation early 2019.
Russian banknote printer Goznak and the Bank of Russia have presented the commemorative banknote of 100 rubles for the FIFA World Cup 2018.
From the press release: "The design of the front of the banknote symbolizes a link between generations: a boy is dreaming to repeat the achievements of great football players like Lev Yashin, a goalkeeper whose name is written into the history of the world football.
The back of the note features a stylized image of the globe in the form of a football with a colour image of the territory of Russian Federation outlined on it. Below emphasizing the ball’s movement, there are the names of the cities hosting the playoffs. At the top of the back of the banknote, there are silhouettes of football fans printed in the colours of the Russian flag.
The use of the polymer substrate has made it possible to incorporate visual security features that can be checked from both sides of the banknote thanks to the polymer transparency. For example, a bright holographic image is observed at the top on both sides of the banknote.
Line marks at the edges of the front of the banknote have raised relief and can be identified by touch.
QR-code on the front side of banknote contains a link to the page of the Bank of Russia website with the description of the note’s security features.
The official logotype and emblem of the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ become visible under ultraviolet light.
Roughly 20 million notes will be brought into circulation."
I personally think this new note looks amazing!
The Narodne Banka na Republika Makedonia (National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia) has issued two new banknotes of 10 and 50 denarii on 15 May 2018.
"These banknotes were printed on a polymer substrate. They are the first polymer banknotes issued by NBRM. The design of new banknotes is based on paper counterparts in circulation. As of May 15, 2018, new polymeric banknotes in these denominations replaced the paper ones that have been issued since 1996. After May 15, 2018 paper banknotes with denominations of 10 and 50 denarii will disappear from the general circulation and will be exchanged by commercial banks by May 15, 2019. After May 1, 2019, the above-mentioned paper banknotes will be exchanged only in NBRM branches."
The Banco Central de Bolivia has introduced the first banknote of the new family of notes on 10 April 2018 (for some reason I completely forgot to write about this).
On the front we see: José Santos Vargas, "El Tambor Vargas", a guerrilla who fought in the War of Independence; Apiaguaiki Tüpa, leader of the Guarani who fought against the subjugation of the lands of his people and Eustaquio Méndez, "El Moto Méndez", who also fought in the struggle for the independence of Bolivia.
Additionally, we see Isla del Pescado, located in the Salar de Uyuni, a place that from a distance resembles the figure of a fish; and the Cavern of Umajalanta, located in Torotoro, which is the most extensive and deep of Bolivia.
Representing the fauna and flora of Boliovia we see images of the Giant Hummingbird, bird of the Andean region
that is characterized by its large size, up to 22 centimeters; and the Puya Raimondi, a plant that exceeds ten meters in height and that blooms only once every 80 years, before dying.
In three months the 20-bolivianos note will follow and so on until all the notes have been issued. The new notes are printed by Oberthur Fiduciare SAS who won the tender last year.
After a few weeks vacation in the USA I'm back in the Netherlands with a few new banknotes. First I found a star note in my daily change: a 1-dollar replacement note (P-537r). While enjoying myself in Universal Studios Orlando I found out that in Harry Potter World the local Gringotts Bank distributed fantasy Gringotts banknotes of 10 and 20 dollar. Of course I had to get one which you can see here.
That wasn't the only fantasy note because I finally found a 'banknote' from the biggest themepark in the Netherlands, the Efteling. The note is a 2-euro coupon which is actually still valid if you would choose to pay with it.
Finally my uncle arrived home from his second home in Thailand with a nice present for me: the first three Thai banknotes with the portrait of the new King. A nice addition to my Thailand collection.
Update: and my uncle even had three more banknotes, from Laos this time. Two varieties of a 1-kip note (one wirh an error (P25a1) and the other where the error is corrected (P25a2)) and a 1,000-kip note (P32Ab).
The Central Bank of the Solomon Islands has announced that it will issue a new commemorative banknote of 40 dollars in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the country's independence. Together with the new banknote a 2-dollar coin will be issued.
The new note is expected by July 2018 (the country received its independence on 7 July 1978).
The National Bank of Cambodia has issued a new banknote of 20,000 rials at the occasion of the 65th birthday of the King Norodom Sihamoni.
It measures 155 x 72 mm, the dominant colors are light pink, dark pink and brown. On the front it shows the King . The back shows the Banteay Srei Temple in Siem Reap province.
The Central Bank of Nepal (Nepal Rastra Bank, NRB) has issued a new 500-rupees note on 25 April 2018.
The front of the note shows the Mount Everest (Chomolungma) left and a watermark of the national flower ‘Rhododendron’ on the right side. There is a signature of Governor Dr. Chiranjibi Nepal in the lower part of the note, and there is date mentioned as V.S.2073 in Nepali in the border.
The back of the note shows a tiger and the Bank logo, the text NEPAL RASTRA BANK and RUPEES FIVE HUNDRED written in English. We can also see the date 2016 A.D. A total of 180 million notes have been printed by Perum Peruri from Indonesia.
