Seychelles presents new series of banknotes

According to a press release by the Central Bank of Seychelles the island nation is planning to issue new banknotes in December 2016. The new banknote family will have as its theme "Seychelles' Unique Biodiversity – the backbone of our economy". The new series will have different sized paper banknotes of 500-, 100-, 50- and 25-rupees. The current series of banknotes will remain legal tender until further notice.

Aesthetically I would have preferred some more color differentiation in the banknotes. The images look very nice but it also looks like they only had one color crayon per banknote.

Seychelles to issue commemorative 10-rupees note

According to MRI Bankers' Guide the Central Bank of Seychelles is set to issue a commemorative 10-rupees note in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the independence of the island nation in the Indian Ocean.

The picture of the new notes show the current 10-rupees note with a stamp on it. The official date of independence is 29 June 1976 and that date has come and gone. One would expect the note to be issued at least in 2016 so we'll have to wait and see.

India to issue a 2,000-rupees note soon?

The Reserve Bank of India is supposedly ready to issue banknotes of 2,000 rupees, the International Business Times reports. This would top the current highest denomination of 1,000 rupees.

The new notes are already printed at the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India located in Mysuru, according to the news article. Unfortunately there is no date mentioned when these notes could be issued.

Venezuela to issue higher denominations soon?

The website DeInmediato reports that the Central Bank of Venezuela has ordered the printing of banknotes of 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 bolivares. Because of the massive inflation in Venezuela (700% in 2016 according to the IMF) the people in Venezula are in demand of much higher denominations than currently available (the highest denomination is a 100-bolivares note at this moment).

There have been rumours of higher denominations before so we'll have to wait if these new rumours prove to be true. The new notes should be available at the end of 2016.

Update 1 December 2016: new rumours from Bloomberg/Quint predict new notes of 500- and 5,000-bolivares to be issued mid-January and new denominations of 1,000-, 2,000-, 10,000- and 20,000-bolivares in the first half of 2017. We'll see...

Argentina issues new 200-pesos note

The National Bank of Argentina has issued the new 200-pesos note on 26 October 2016. The note is the second in the new series after the introduction of the 500-pesos note on 29 june 2016.

The blue 200-pesos note shows a Southern Right whale, the Argentine Sea, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands.

Im my humble opinion this is one of the most beautiful series being issued right now.

Thai mourners warned of fake golden banknotes

Yes, another item regarding Thailand... People in Thailand have been warned not to buy 'golden commemorative notes' which are being sold at the Grand Palace, where the late King Bhumibol is lying in state.

Vendors have been passing these notes as real commemorative notes which supposedly have been issued after the King's death. People are warned however not to buy them because they are forgeries.

The design looks like a 1,000-bath note issued in 2005 (P115).

News from the Bank of Thailand after the King's dead

The Bank of Thailand has announced in the wake of the King's dead that it will continue issuing banknotes with the image of King Bhumibol on the front. This is good news for the Thai because there were concerns that the current banknotes would become obsolete after the King's passing.

There is also some other (good) news for us collectors because the note you knew would be issued is coming: a new commemorative banknote celebrating the late King's 7th cycle birthday on 25 October 2016. A total of 200,000-300,000 notes will be issued and the 100-baht note will come with a pamphlet. The new notes will be sold for 200 baht.

World News on Banknotes: King Bhumibol has died

Sad news for the Thai: today the royal palace has announced that King Bhumibol or Rama IX has died at the age of 88. The late king had an almsot divine status in Thailand and was the subject of many beautiful (commemorative) banknotes the past few years. It is expected that his son Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn will succeed him.

Below the back of the beautiful 16-baht note with images from the late king's life.

Bahamas introduces new 10-dollar note

The Central Bank of the Bahamas has introduced a new 10-dollar note. This note is the first of the new CRISP Evolution series. CRISP is an acronym for Counterfeit Resistant Integrated Security Product. The description of the new note from the press release:

"Predominantly blue, with various shades of green and pink, the banknote measures 156 mm long and 67 mm wide, bearing on the front a portrait of Sir Stafford Sands, the series, and a signature of the Governor of the Central Bank of The Bahamas, together with the words "The Central Bank of The Bahamas. These notes are legal tender under the Central Bank of The Bahamas Act 2000 for the payment of any amount Ten Dollars". A watermark of Sir Stafford Sands with the numeral $10, a replica map of the Islands of The Bahamas, and the denominational value in words and figures appear on the left, with an image of a Yellow Elder flower in the centre. The back carries a vignette depicting a rendering of Hope Town Lighthouse, Abaco along with two flamingoes. The vignette is flanked above by the numeral $10, to the right by the words "Ten Dollars", and below by the Coat-of-Arms of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas along with the words "The Central Bank of The Bahamas".

The new banknote has been designed by De la Rue. They mention some of the new security elements in their press release:

"Using concept designs provided by the Bank, this note is a world first for a fully circulating banknote with De La Rue’s Active™ security thread and the first of a new family of banknotes that will be introduced over the next few years. (...) The new security thread also appears on the back of the note. When the note is tilted, the colours of the sand dollar and the number 10 in the thread switch from light on dark to dark on light. There is also a colour changing SPARK® Orbital™ ink in the butterfly on the front of the note."

Several people have mentioned this new note to me, so thank you all. And I agree with all of you: this is a beautiful new note which could be a serious contender for the Banknote of the Year Award
