India to issue new 200-rupees note soon

The Reserve Bank of India will soon issue a new 200-rupees note according to the Financial Express. A printing order has supposedly been placed. This printing of this note is being done to improve the currency situation in the country. After the announcement of demonetisation in November last year, the RBI had introduced new notes of 500- and 2,000-rupees.

On social media the image below has been shown as the new banknote but it is likely a photoshopped note.

Syria to issue new 2,000-pound note

USNEWS.com reports that the Central Bank of Syria has announced that a 2,000-pound banknote featuring a portrait of Syrian President Ashad will go into circulation. This would be the first time Syria will depict President Bashar Assad on its currency since he took office 17 years ago. The back of the note shows the People's Council of Syria inside the Parliament Building in Damascus, Syria.

The new note will be issued from 9 July 2017. The image below is from a press conference by the Central Bank Governor Duraid Durgham on 2 July 2017. I'm sure this note will be popular with collectors of notes with notorious leaders.

Update 6-7-2017: we have better pictures (from banknotenews.com).

Iran has issued a new 10,000-rial note

The Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran has issued its new note of 10,000-rial in June. The new note is reduced in size (from 77 × 160 mm to 71 × 142), has a large number 1 as a registration device and invisible security fibers in yellow, red, blue and green, which are visible with ultraviolet light.

The final design is just slightly different from the image which was shown in March of this year.

Yemen has two new banknotes?

Banknotenews.com reports that in the war-torn nation of Yemen new banknotes of 500- and 5,000-rial have been reported. The banknote of 500-rial is supposedly ordered by the Central Bank of Yemen for general circulation. This note might have been printed in Russia. In 2014 the director of Goznak gave an interview claiming that Yemen was one of the countries they printed banknotes for so perhaps they are the printer.

The 5,000-rial note is supposedly issued by a rival bank in the northern part of the country. This note has also been printed in Russia. Maybe also by Goznak? A very strange situation indeed.

Below images of the 500- and 5,000-rial notes (images from banknotenews.com).

Dutch banknote designer Ootje Oxenaar dead at 87

Sad news this week when it was announced that the famous Dutch banknote designer Ootje Oxenaar passed away at the age of 87. Ootje Oxenaar studied visual arts at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague starting in 1947. From 1966 until 1985 he worked for the Nederlandsche Bank, where he designed two series of well known banknotes (the 'Erflaters' series featuring famous Dutch people from the past, and perhaps the most famous series of Dutch banknotes featuring for instance a lighthouse, a sun flower and a sandpiper).

He was the Director of Art and Design, Post and Telecommunications of The Netherlands. Oxenaar taught at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in the graphic design department.

Below a few of his beautiful designs and here's a link to a previous post about him: "Oxenaar gave everyone the finger".

New 50- and 100-dollar notes for the Bahamas

Fortress Paper has announced that the Central Bank of the Bahamas will use the Durasafe substrate developed by their subsidiary Landqart AG for the new 50- and 100-dollar banknotes. These new notes are planned for introduction in 2018. This relatively new material is also used in the new banknote series of Switzerland.

From the press release some more explanation about Durasafe: "Durasafe® is an innovative composite paper-polymer-paper banknote substrate developed by Landqart in cooperation with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zürich. Durasafe® is composed of two cotton paper outer layers with a fully transparent polymer core. The polymer core in Durasafe® adds stability and higher mechanical strength properties to banknotes as well as high security features. The substrate's unique properties allow windows to be formed virtually anywhere on the banknote and can contain a watermark and security fibres as well as traditional security features, including easy-to-recognise banknote paper tactility."

Update 11-12-2019: it took a while but the new 50-dollar note was issued on 3 October 2019. According to a press release, this is the first note in the world with a Rapid security thread on Durasafe substrate.

Bangladesh issues updated 100- and 500-taka notes

The Central Bank of Bangladesh has introduced updated versions of their 100- and 500-taka notes, according to an article in the Dhaka Tribune. The new notes look the same as the existing ones but have an added security feature: a 4-mm Kinetic StarChrome windowed security thread which has been developed by De la Rue

From the security features website of De la Rue: "Kinetic StarChrome®, also part of Cash Supply Chain, is a specialist security thread combining the two proven technologies of Starchrome® and Classical Holography. This combination delivers a high-impact feature which is easily seen and understood by the public, yet complex for counterfeiters to attempt to simulate. Available in a range of widths, window lengths and demetallisation options making it suitable for all denominations, Kinetic StarChrome® is also fully compatible with machine readability and high speed banknote processing."

Georgia announces new 5-lari banknote

The National Bank of Georgia has announced that from 1 September 2017 a new banknote of 5 lari will be issued. The front features the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and a portrait of historian and linguist Ivane Javakhishvili himself.

On the back we can see the painting "Fisherman in a Red Shirt" by Niko Pirosmani as well as the painting "Threshing Yard. Evening".

It looks rather nice, don't you think? As a matter of fact: this is the second brownish note which has been presented recently which I like (after the new 10-pound note from the Bank of Scotland). I might have to revise my opinion on the color perhaps?

Canada issues new commemorative note

The Bank of Canada has issued its 10-dollar commemorative banknote on 1 June 2017. This spectacular new note is (of course) already nominated for Banknote of the Year 2017 or I would have nominated it.

You will all understand I ordered it immediately for my collection. Read more about what's on this note in my previous post

Bank of Scotland introduces new 10-pound note

The Bank of Scotland has announced it will issue a new polymer 10-pound note in the Autumn of 2017.

The new note has a portrait of the Scottish novelist and poet, Sir Walter Scott on the front together with an image of The Mound, the historic head office of the Bank of Scotland. The date on the note reads 1 June 2016. The back of the note shows the Glenfinnan Viaduct (yes, the one pictured in the Harry Potter movies) with a steam locomotive hauling a heritage tourist train. The locomotive is a preserved Stanier "Black 5", which was designed for the London, Midland and Scottish railway and is often seen on the West Highland line.

The new note is designed by De la Rue and incorporates the same security features we saw in the last 5-pound note: the "window effect" which will be built into the windows of the image of The Mound, and the "rolling bar" metallic ink which changes color as the note is moved. A new feature is the "tactile emboss" (created by a series of raised dots) which will aid the visually impaired.

I'm usually not a huge fan of a brown-green colorscheme but this one looks rather good. Maybe because of the nice train...

Uruguay announces commemorative 50-peso note

The Banco Central del Uruguay has announced that a new polymer commemorative note of 50 peso will be issued to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Central Bank. A total of 10 million notes will be issued.

No word yet on the issue date. The Central Bank was established on 6 July 1967 but an issue around that date seems a bit soon.

Switzerland announces issue date new 10-francs note

Lots of Swiss news these days. We've just been presented with the new 20-francs note. And the first note of the new series, the 50-francs note, was recently awarded Banknote of the Year 2016.

But now there is more news as the Swiss National Bank (SNB) has announced that the third note in the series will be issued from 18 October 2017 (and if they keep up with the tradition likely presented around 11 August 2017). The 10-francs note will have Time as its theme and will be yellow of colour.

Anyone expecting an expensive Swiss watch somewhere on the note?
