Bolivia issues first note of new family

The Banco Central de Bolivia has introduced the first banknote of the new family of notes on 10 April 2018 (for some reason I completely forgot to write about this).

On the front we see: José Santos Vargas, "El Tambor Vargas", a guerrilla who fought in the War of Independence; Apiaguaiki Tüpa, leader of the Guarani who fought against the subjugation of the lands of his people and Eustaquio Méndez, "El Moto Méndez", who also fought in the struggle for the independence of Bolivia.

Additionally, we see Isla del Pescado, located in the Salar de Uyuni, a place that from a distance resembles the figure of a fish; and the Cavern of Umajalanta, located in Torotoro, which is the most extensive and deep of Bolivia.

Representing the fauna and flora of Boliovia we see images of the Giant Hummingbird, bird of the Andean region
that is characterized by its large size, up to 22 centimeters; and the Puya Raimondi, a plant that exceeds ten meters in height and that blooms only once every 80 years, before dying.

In three months the 20-bolivianos note will follow and so on until all the notes have been issued. The new notes are printed by Oberthur Fiduciare SAS who won the tender last year.

Swaziland changes its name to eSwatini.

The King of Swaziland, Mswati III, has decided to rename the country to eSwatini. The name means: "land of the Swazis". One of the reasons for this move is that the King thinks people confuse his country with Switzerland...

Right. So he changed it to a name which makes people think it's an online country...

It's not yet clear if this means that the banknotes will also get a reprint with the new name on it.

Czech Republic picks design for commemorative note

The Czech National Bank has held a competition for the design of the new commemorative 100-korun banknote which should be issued in 2019. The note commemorates the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1919 and the introduction of the korun as the national currency.

All in all 15 artists, who submitted a total of 17 graphic designs, participated in the competition. The first prize and recommendation for realization was won by designer Eva Hašková for an excellent artistic level, mastering the specifics of the banknotes, a concise portrait and the beautiful harmony of both sides of the proposed note. The bank’s board confirmed on 1 March 2018 the decision to use this design in the note to be issued next year.

I think they chose wisely.

The Banco Central de Reserva del Perú has issued a new 20-soles banknote. It looks similar to the existing 20-nuevos soles but it now has the new currency name on it.

In December 2015 the Congress of Peru decided to change the name of the national currency from "nuevo sol" to just "sol". The nuevo sol was the new name for the currency from 1 July 1991 when it replaced the old "inti". Both the old and new version of the banknote will co-circulate.

Venezuela announces new currency and banknotes

The Central Bank of Venezuela will issue a new family of banknotes with a new name for its currency. The new currency will be called "bolívar soberano" equal to 1,000 bolívares fuertes.

The new series will be issued from 4 June 2018 and will have denominations of 2-, 5-, 10-, 20-, 50-, 100-, 200- and 500-bolívares soberanos. The new name of the currency doesn't appear on the new banknotes.

Venezuela, potentially one of the richest countries in the world, is completely bankrupt due to a corrupt government, bad economic policy and the constant blaming of other countries for its own problems. New banknotes and a new currency won't change any of their problems of course but hey: something new for us collectors.

Switzerland announces 200-francs note

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) has announced when the new 200-francs note will be issued. In the press release it says: "With the 50-franc, 20-franc and 10-franc notes now issued, the next denomination in the new series to be released will be the 200-franc note. It will be presented on 15 August and will enter circulation on 22 August 2018. The key motif of the 200-franc note – matter – showcases Switzerland’s scientific expertise."

I'm very curious about the design of the note because so far the new series has been beautiful in my opinion.

Guatemala returns to cotton 5-quetzales banknotes

The Bank of Guatemala is taking a reverse route when it comes to polymer notes compared to many other countries. Their current 5-quetzales note (introduced in 2008) is made of polymer but now they've announced the future notes will made from cotton again. The change will be made gradually in the next two years.

The design of the new cotton fiver will probably be more or less the same and the two notes can be used simultaneously.

Update 2-11-2018: pictures!
